Is the shaft slightly bent? Mine was, and possibly still is bent (i did heat it up and bend it back), i just pop a small pot below where the drip comes from then pour it back in the gearbox!! not ideal but i cant be 4rsed to sort it out

If the shaft is corroded in the contact area of the seal, it will can't seal eh ? And the other common problem is that the seal can get nicked when sliding over the gear selector spline.

It is easy to damage the new seal if you don't grease the shaft before locating it.oldjapanesebikes wrote:If the shaft is corroded in the contact area of the seal, it will can't seal eh ? And the other common problem is that the seal can get nicked when sliding over the gear selector spline.

If the shaft was bent , which I haven’t checked for , wouldn’t it snag or be difficult to locate through the hole in the sidecover ?

Light application of percussive assistance works in that case.
If that don't do it, use a bigger hammer!
