Dripping Collars, any tips

Post by apwrigs »

Has anyone got any tips to stop an annoying oil drip from behind the exhaust collar.

Ive just fitted 3 new gaskets, been out for a quick blast and bugger!!!!!, right cylinder still leaking. Ive tightened the exhaust bolts as tight as i dare, as anyone ever doubled up on the gaskets???.

Mine was doing the same and driving me mad, I was recommended to use normal silicone bathroom sealer on the gaskets and headers (I was assured it could take the heat), since then not a trace of the black stuff !

Hi spin the collars on the pipes so when you tighten them you have a slight gap between the collars and the exhaust port, not flush  take care.do not over tighten the collar bolts easy to strip the threads in the barrels   once these gaskets are crushed they need to be replaced as they will leak :!: slacken rear mounts as well before you do up the exhaust collars, helps to align things. ;)
Cheers.

+1 on what roger says never have the collars flush always leave a gap and just a bit of gasket sealant or similar on the gasket will do the job,2sj

:tw a drop of Loctite on the collar bolt threads, a little anti seize on the collar threads & the exhaust pipe threads to stop them seizing ;) .

Thanks for the advice chaps. This is a niggling problem ive had ever since having the exhausts re chromed, the polisher went overboard when polishing around the threads and took away some of the decent grip needed when tightening the bolts.
so ive been reading back on the subject and although two out of the three pipes have worked with aluminium tape around the threads, a local bike enthusiast with welding skills is going to spot weld the leaking collar just in front of the thread, this should hopefully give me some grip.

I will update with the result later in the week. Watch this space !!!!!!!
