Water pump leaking after new cartridge installation

Post by EvansWard »

Replaced the full water pump cartridge on my GT750A after noticing more coolant leakage underneath than normal on the old unit. Got the new WP cartridge from the Suzuki dealer along with a new housing cover gasket. Installation was straight forward, put some 2 stroke oil on both cartridge seals, and made sure to align notch before seating the cartridge installation. Installed the bigger cutclip, impeller, and smaller circlip. Used Permatex The Right stuff gasket goo on both sides on the gasket after a good cleaning of the surface areas before. I waited 24 hrs cure time for gasket sealer and then filled the cooling system up fully before trying to start it. Noticed coolant was coming out (streaming) the WP weep hole on cover underneath. What could I have done wrong? Am I supposed to fill some coolant then start engine allowing WP cartridge to move/ seat/ seal and then continue to add coolant? Help please!

You will probably find that it will stop leaking after a minute or so running as the mechanical seal beds in just keep an eye on it

Well.... ran it for about 15 minutes for the mechanical seal to bed in and it still leaks badly :( I've ordered 2 more NOS housing gaskets as well as a nice used housing cover in case I have warpage or other issues there. Pretty bummed but will go at it again. Any guesses why the new cartridge assembly is leaking coolant consistently through the weep hole?

I know it's a bummer but it might be worthwhile taking the pump back out and checking for damage, especially to the two outer o rings. I had a similar problem and it turned out to be a damaged ring upon installation

If it's leeking out of the weep hole, that usually a pointer to a damaged seal. Best of luck.

I will give it a proper run and see if that helps.

If it does turn out to be a bad or torn seal, where can one purchase just the seals from?
