Setting up points / timing gt 750

Post by Peot1100 »

Hi all anyone know anyone in the Berkshire area that knows how to properly set up points on an 1975 m GT 750

It’s currently running on a piper 3 into 1 but I have tried setting up without dial gauge and think I’ve screwed it up as it’s miss firing And was when on the old pipes as well.
Cheers

Err - fit an Accent electronic ignition.....

I know that some people have no issues with points and love to keep that old school technology. For the rest of us, it's just simpler to thrown 'em away and fit something modern and stone axe reliable.

With all due respect, that's like arguing that mobile phones are not reliable, so we shouldn't use them. Modern electronics are extremely reliable, but you are right that nothing man made can be 100% reliable.

Some people argue that points are OK and worked well for 100 years or more and others that they are cheaper and they are right, but to some of us it just makes sense to upgrade where we can, when we can.

But we won't all agree all the time. :)

How much would I spend on genuine points in the last 5 years,?
Accent system has been reliable ,no problems, time saving also not having to fiddle with points .Motobatt Battery also better than wet cell technology ;)
Cheers.

Hi. just checking my timing with a diaL gauge; works fine on the outer two cylinders, but the gauge will not fit in the centre cylinder as there's no room, not enough height because of the coils. what does everyone else do?

If the timing marks are good for the other 2 cylinders the timing marks must be good use them..

I use the dial gauge to check the timing marks, if they are accurate (not always so) you can use them. If they’re out remark them and your good to go.
They're rubbish them Jap bikes lad they won't last five minutes! you want to get yourself a nice Royal Enfield!
A quote from my old dad 8-)

I started out with nothing and I’ve got most of it left!
