Something odd here. Excess voltage (within reason) will not blow a fuse, so I don't see how the new RR unit did that.

The excess voltage is caused by a design fault in the stock wiring loom and that relay fix is probably the cleanest answer to it. Admittedly a stock old style Regulator can be adjusted to compensate for the low voltage on the sensor line. It's not elegant but it works if you have a good stock regulator and rectifier.

I have fitted OEM on a couple of rebuilds, Oregon on another and a solid state on two other bikes and all can be made to work and all take some faffing about if you wish to avoid battery acid spills or LiPo batteries on fire.

But you are correct that nothing is a simple plug and play if you wish to upgrade the old girl.
