Depends on how you clutch feels.
If it feels ragged when you let it out then it needs cleaning up.

Its not fitted as yet but there is a 0.82mm groove in one of the tangs and the rest 0.20mm

Hi Mick
Not mine mate its Stans he's building a "L" and just come to put motor together and has these severe grooves in the basket tangs.I think with deep grooves you would get crunching in first as the the clutch would not engage fully me thinks

Grooves shouldn't stop the clutch engaging, but might stop it disengaging. This would definitely clunk on engaging 1st at standstill and also make neutral selection at standstill very bad. Just relieve the grooves with a file so the clutch fingers are smooth. I had to do it on both 550s I resto'ed so far and probably will on this one too.
