Gearbox oil level

Post by bobhenry999 »

All,

I am only into the second week of my Kettle ownership, and I was wondering if someone can help with what seems daft question.

How do I check the gearbox oil level ?

On my other performance classic (FS1e !) the filler plug has a dipstick attached, but on the GT it`s just a filler plug with no dipstick.

Or do I have to drop the gearbox oil and just measure in the correct amount ?

Bob

+1 don't use the inspection bolt. Always measure oil in AND out.

If you read the manual it says the oil will flow out of that bolt at the correct level. That is not true! Hence always measure.. :D

Oddly enough, pour in the correct amount and nothing seeps out of the level plug. Check it the next week and whole lot of oil comes out. The problem seems to be that oil takes a while to settle to the same level in each and all compartments.

Hi, Teazer you are changing it hot ?
Flows better  more will come out if changed when hot / warm, there will always be oil sitting inside clutch & transmission that will never come out, unless the cases are split open for any reason ;) Hence the need to add around 2,500 cc of oil after a rebuild of the motor.
As previously stated, measure out & in 8-)
Cheers.

When filling the engine with oil put a match or thin screw driver in the inspection hole to break the surface tension of the oil. That way you won’t over fill it and wonder why the oil comes out the hole the next time you take the screw out.
