The decision to use DOT 5 brake fluid is brought about by the fact that it does not eat paint. Painting the master cylinder and cap are my best options for restoration as I have very limited resources for anodizing the MS, (And to a further extent not trusting a shop to gum up my only original MS.) Yes, painting is not OEM but at the end of the day, it will compliment the bike. A new reservoir is on the way and the MS has been cleaned and cleaned and then cleaned. I have a pattern decal for the top lid. Also the DOT 5 will be going in a system with all new hoses, rebuilt calipers and MS and ultrasonic cleaned banjo bolts.. There should be no trace of the last used hydraulic fluid.

Question: I have not put the DOT 5 in yet and just to be sure, Is DOT 5 a workable solution?

Cheers,

Sky

Dot 5 is fine, for the reasons you state. Baz used it when he rebuilt my GT750 'the Hippo' a couple of years ago and it's fine.
Don't mix it with dot 5.1 though as they don't like one another!!

+1 with Alan on the dot5 silicone. I am a convert. Also you are right to paint as re anodising is risky. A friend of my with 30 years anodising experience advised me not to do mine as there is a chance that the bore can become enlarged.

Another DOT5 user here for the past 15 yrs mainly due to my bikes having pretty nice paint that I don’t want to damage. It feels fine to me in all braking situations.
