Re: Feeling painty
Aztec Gold Candy coat applied to start a J tank.
I've used extreme sparkle silver basecoat thanks to the suggestion ofan old reprobate a thoroughly nice chap. It gives a rougher finish than standard basecoat so I've had to lay down several coats of binder so I can flat it back without damaging the candy coat. Next job, mask off and try and apply the J stripes. No decals this time

Looks a bit greener than gold, but maybe that's the basecoat in strange light?
Undercoats are strange until topped with proper topcoat and laquer.
Those halogen heaters are brill. I have one in the garage for cold days as well!
Great minds obviously think alike.

Candy is strange stuff. The more sparkly basecoat does make it look a different shade under some light, plus the natural light is filtering through green material so that doesn't help The only light you get a proper view of it is sunlight and you get sod all of that in this country
The real problem with trying to match a NOS part is that Suzuki used virtually no primer, a whiff of basecoat, a smidgeon of candy and a breath of lacquer so the depth isnt there. The lacquer also darkens over the years and starts to look slightly muddy. You have to really concentrate on getting the tint right to get near what it would have looked liked brand new.
Yes, the Halogen heater brings me tent up to temp in ten minutes. Very handy.

Oh, I don't want it exactly 'right' - just slightly wrong will be perfect.
I still need to annoy the anoraks out there!!
I'll hammer them down to my level and beat them with experience........

Re: Feeling painty
Started the ticklish job of creating the black and white panel detail.
I'll get away with vinyl tape for the thin white stripes but I think I might end up airbrushing the thicker one if I can't get the tape to curve
I doubt that this is accurate to the original but hey ho, practice makes perfect

Re: Feeling painty
Looking good Kev, knowing you it will turn out perfect.
Here is my attempt at painting and lining a tank & side panels
It was Kawa green & white btw. In my defence it was my one & only attempt, it was done with rattle cans and I was only about 25! In my mind I didn't imagine it would look like this when I started it
