Gt550 neutral light and part gear indicator

Post by Keithfgb »

Hi All,it’s been a while since I’ve had the gt550 out but today the neutral light is not on and I only have part of the digits on the gear indicator in some gears. I’m going to assume it’s the bulb on the neutral light but would like some confirmation of this and do you think the gear indicator issue is just coincidence or linked to the neutral light fault. If I need a new gear indicator display where is best to get one? Thanks in advance for any advice. Keith.

Someone like Allan will be along to give a definitive, but if both the neutral light and the indicator have "failed" at the same time, I would be looking at the gearbox switch if the bulb proves to be OK, its just a series of brass contacts that run to earth (the engine) they can get mucky or damaged.

Remove your left side cover. Find the blue wire & earth it with the Ignition on. The neutral light should illuminate. If it does you require a new switch .

Well,it’s not the bulb. I checked that but disturbed some wiring in the process and now the main fuse is blowing. Big bugger. So tomorrow’s job is to find where it’s shorting then strip the switch. That’s what holidays are for,I didn’t want to ride it this week anyway. Grrrrr.

Well I found the problem to the answer. The chain has rubbed part way through the gear indicator switch harness, another expensive mistake on my behalf. Backside well and truly kicked. Has anyone got one spare or know if it’s possible to have a new harness fitted.

Hi Keith, it is repairable but obviously you need to live without your beloved bike for a few days whilst it is away. New one's cost over £100 so a bit pricey going down that route.

Don't forget if you are taking it off there are two things to think about.
1. You have to drain the gearbox first or you will have a nice puddle on the floor
2. Don't lose the o ring seal

PM me and I will try and help

No need to drain the oil, just gently lay the bike over until it’s supported by the footrest. Bingo all the oil runs away from the switch and you can replace it without loosing a drop ;)
They're rubbish them Jap bikes lad they won't last five minutes! you want to get yourself a nice Royal Enfield!
