Re: GT550 starter clutch
I'm away at the mo', so I haven't got access to pics & info.
If you can wait a week or so, I'll post some details. And if you want to sell the old (early type) clutch, I'll buy it off you.
Keep the plates, springs and pressure plate, they swap.
There's a good site on line with an excellent exploded diagram of a late clutch to compare what you've got with.
Just found it. Click model, year, clutch etc.

Re: GT550 starter clutch
Hi Dave. Have a look at GT26 it will explain all!

It is a little confusing i read it many times..... But the extra thrust washer is only needed if you mix old pressure plate and new starter clutch.
I have done this mod to my J some time ago

Re: GT550 starter clutch
Hi Barney
Thanks for the info to say it's a little confusing is an understatement,i think the main problem i use Haynes Manual in the garage most the time when messing. As you are aware it covers GT380 & GT550 but the motor being re-built is GT380.There are notes generally when certain things apply to 550 but nothing regarding starter clutch because GT380 don't have electric starts. Therefore when re-assembling the clutch first part to push onto clutch drive shaft is a hardened plate washer not got one on my "L" so does the new style clutch mech (Borg Warner) need one. At the stage of re-assembly and doh wanna mess it up.Thrust washer between pressure plate and clutch basket both ok no probs,it's that reference in the bloody Haynes that's throwing me.
Cheers Dave

Re: GT550 starter clutch
Just got all my books out i have Haynes, Clymers and both parts books early and late GT550.
I see what you mean there is a thrust washer first on the shaft on the early style starter clutch.
This is not present on the later diagrams.
I certainly didn't have one when i replaced mine with the Borg Warner.

Re: GT550 starter clutch
Dunno for sure but thinking about changes made to the new style, replacement of the shell type bearing in the primary gear to needle roller, perhaps a thrust washer may be required to halt any movement down the drive shaft
