gt550 starter motor

Post by quark77 »

after fitting a replacement starter clutch , the starter motor is still whizzing without turning over the engine , on removing the starter motor i found where it mates to the engine casing a huge wad of black sealant , this obviously backs the starter out , i wonder whether its not engaging properly because of this ? otherwise it seems ok !

There should be no sealant,as far as I remember there's a O ring on the starter that seals the joint, take the sealant away and see why it's there in the first place,

If it was standing the motor off then you would not be able to bolt it down. If it was bolted down ok you have a different problem. Is the small idler gear fitted correctly to the crankcase side?

This is the sucker I mean

The problem with the idler gear is the two mounting bolts can work loose and the whole thing could wobble about.

That's what I found when I rebuilt mine. With any luck, no damage, just refit with plenty of Loctite
