Hi gents
Just introducing myself so take it easy with me lol
Sadly an old friend has got real poorly, and knowing I tinker with bikes has asked if I can bring his gt550 back to life( it was stolen around 20 yr ago, not ran since)
Making good progress, I think ?
Unfortunately I cannot seem to time it correctly
Trouble is I turn eng to 3-37 btdc revolve the timing plate as the "l", points are fixed but run out of slot space ?,
I even thought of filing slots lol to revolve it more lol
Scratching my head lads as it's around 6mm btdc
Could it have had wrong points??? With wrong angle ??
Regards
Mozz

Hi Mozz and welcome to the forum. No worries we will help you out
Can you tell us a bit about the bike? What year or model is it? Have you had it running at all? Finally whereabouts are you located someone may be nearby to help.

Re: gt 550 timing
This seems to happen with most Suzukis - plenty of slot but in the wrong place I had to set the points gap at about 20thou on one to get the firing point anywhere near where it should be

Re: gt 550 timing
Many thanks gents for the warm welcome
It's a 75 bike we think density system
Was trying to time it up using a firstly dial gauge then a vernier
Prob being on l cyl, the piston was 3 mm lower than R and C when the markers were lined
Whipped the head off to eliminate improper use of guages, and clearly visible piston on l cyl was 3 mm lower
So .....
When I tried to set the fixed l cyl timing I had run out of space on the slotted backplate hence points opening at around 6.5 mm btdc
As opposed to c and r cyl opening on the marker at around 3.3 mm btdc
Met up with Alan , smashing fella great hospitality, and yes I'm a bit of a yam 2 stroke freak- I have 7 pre 72 bikes lol

Yup. Looking at those corks and labels, if I had always been teetotal, I'd have a Rolls Royce and a MV now......mizzytheman wrote:Must have been taking his medication to be in a good mood
