voltage to battery

Post by TonupKid52 »

Hi All, Ray here need some thoughts on this [1974L gt550] Noted that the battery on me bike has not enought energy to turn over on starter.
have had this on a trickle charger and it says weak battery. Kick started bike ran her to 4.5 rpm and had a reading of 14.90 v is this too much?
Would this be why the battery bad ? Frying? Or just a bad battery [had about 18 months] lead battery.

your thoughts Please

Hi ray
14.2 min and below 14.5 perfect.
Over 14.5 battery will start to gas
Over 14.7 battery will boil
So yes 14.9 will dry battery out.

Bad connection to the regulator will make it 'think' the battery is disharged and will therefore overcharge it.
Take the battery off and see what the voltage is after 24 hours.

What sort of battery is it? If lead acid, there IS acid in the cells to correct levels isn't there?

If you have done all the checks and everything seems okay have a look at your voltage regulator. Some of the Suzuki VRs you can take the cap off and adjust the output to stop it overcharging. Be careful some are rivetted together.

That is probably the most common cause of overcharging on bikes with electro magnets. Check the voltage at the regulator on the sensor wire. It is usually low because of voltage drop across the circuit. When the voltage is low on that line, it causes the regulator to keep charging. In this case the battery is probably fried already and will most likely need to be replaced.
