550 Gear box level

Post by slosher »

Does anyone know if the oil level of 1500cc comes anywhere near the engine casing joint ?
The reason i ask is i have an annoying little weep that drips near the back end of motor sprocket side, having looked at all obvious seal's on that side i am now at a loss where the hell it' coming from :x :x

No it doesn't. I bet a pound it is the o ring for the gear position switch that is leaking. You might solve it by tightening the screws down a bit or replace it with one of these

Dave just to confirm that it doesn't look at the diagram here. http://www.3cyl.com/mraxl/gt/manuals/gt ... 550-47.htm
But remember of course that when the gears are spinning oil is being thrown all over the inside of the case. I have seen oil coming from the joint when a ham fisted mate had tried to separate his cases with a large screwdriver!

Leaving the bike on the side stand can increase the risk of a leak on that side of the engine. As can overfilling the oil. Unless it's a dry engine then it takes less than 1500cc to fill to the correct level.
Currently without a GT, but looking

Kev have checked o ring and sprocket and gear shift shaft nought coming from those even bought seal for gear shift was convinced it was that :(
There is a black plastic bung just on the joint which looks suspect near to where the wire clamp is fixed :?:
Good to know level is not near the joint Barney

That rubber bung will be the opposite side of the kickstart shaft then.

What about the o-ring behind the sprocket spacer.
