4LS strip clean and Polish 550 J

Post by barney01 »

Being as I ride all year around and time for a new front tyre, will strip and service 4LS brake to get rid of all that winter crud. The hub's and brake shoes go into a bowl of fairy and warm water and scrub brush to remove all the dust and deposits from the shoe's and dry in the sun. Then brake cleaner spray and paper to clean drum. Good time to wash all inside of the forks and inside of the muddy which I have painted with stonechip.
Going to Polish hub plates on the machine tomorrow then replace the brake shoe pivot posts after they are cleaned and re greased

Yes, a shiny 4LS is a happy 4LS! Must get on with my rebuild......

As bought.

Current status.

Baz did a lovely job of polishing and re rimming the hub.
Dunlop Streetsmarts finish it off nicely.

Alan that second photo looks gorgeous! But first one very badly positioned brake arms and torque arm bolted to the wrong hole on the leg!

The bike had been owned (prior to me buying it and the Earwig) by an alleged 'bike racer' who told me that the wheel was seized and the bike would have to be carried as the wheel wouldn't turn. I snipped the tyrap holding the brake lever to the handlebar, and strangely enough, the brake released and allowed me to push the bike up the sellers garden path and into the van. Maybe he was trying to lead me up the garden path - if so he failed as both bikes cost me less than £600. I did tell him and pointed out the snipped tyrap that I left on his garden as proof.
The brake did work just fine after the tyrap had been removed, but obviously works a lot better now!
Well, he wasn't amused, but I thought it was funny - by that time both bikes were in the van!!

I know some owners like the BT45''s but I prefer the classic look :D

Yes they do but when you put the wheel back in back to front there is no recess to drive the speedo...
Doh!
Took me an hour to strip down correct and reassemble!
Lesson learnt
