GT550 starter motor problem

Post by barney01 »

I have had this problem with my starter for 15 years or so see video
Although my bike is a J model I have updated the clutch to a Borg Warner.
I have done the following :
New positive battery cable
Solenoid stripped and cleaned as is the starter button.
New cable starter motor to solenoid.
Voltage at the SM 12v when ignition on button pressed.
I have tried two starter motors I have one of each make.
Both starter motors stripped new brushes fitted.
The starter idler gear has been checked and bearing renewed
New one way starter clutch bearing replaced.
Finally new earth cable from battery to frame fitted.
Battery is a motobatt fairly new performing well.
Anyone any suggestions?
The bike starts 2nd kick every time.

Hi Barney
That sounds like something not engaging to me the starter sounds positive and seems to have enough power up to it, did you fit that thrust washer between casing and large starter cog or not :?:

Don't forget the Borg Warner large cog is 2mm thicker than the old type it may make a difference if the thrust washer is used, if i can remember i left it out in the end and it's been fine ;)

This one way starter clutch bearing is a fickle device. Annoyingly everything is in the right order and in good condition
