GT550 Kick Starter Spring Tension Steps
Does anyone have some photos showing the pretension steps for the kick starter spring ie; turn 3/4, however what holds the tension on the spring when turned place? The hook on the spring needs to sit correctly in the casing, however what about the other end of the shaft when it has been turned 3/4? Thanks Syd

Syd once the kick start shaft is turned slide the pawl over the shaft and it rests against the stop holding tension on the spring. Don't be tempted to go too much past 3\4 turn it will damage the spring(don't ask me how I know this) which will mean splitting the crankcases! This may help you.http://www.3cyl.com/mraxl/gt/manuals/gt ... 550-28.htm 7-3-13

Thanks for that. I can't seem to find the two punch marks for some reason and the second thing is I can't figure out how the boss of the ratchet wheel touches the stopper when turned 3/4? It's a holiday weekend, therefore must be a bit slow. The photo I took when I opened the cases is not that flash so its not that helpful - if anyone has a photo of the ratchet wheel touching the stopper, that would be great

This is my only pic.
Basically the shaft springs clockwise till it meets the stop.
You only want 3 /4 of a turn more clockwise if say the stop wasn't there. Thats how I set mine up. The picture needs to be turned 90 degrees

Thanks for the pics, so you turn the ratchet 3/4 clockwise until it tensions the spring and ratchet boss or tang touches the stop shown on the RH side ?

Penny has now dropped...you turn the ratchet 3/4 around anticlockwise until it tensions the spring and ratchet boss or tang touches the stop on the RH side

Also, as mentioned earlier, I cannot find the two punch marks for some reason, how critical is this to the procedure?

I never saw the marks. One other thing to note is there should be a thrust washer on last as per the parts diagram. This stops the shaft moving in and out.
I think mine wasn't fitted so ill have to to remove the cover again.
