Engine partly stripped and clutch off. Centre nut finger tight and locking washer not tabbed over so it looks like the previous 'mechanic' may have been ok at playing with hiself......possibly.
Starter clutch is the later type and wouldn't grip until I'd washed the borg warner bit in thinners to get all the oil out of it - possibly fully synthetic? Anyway it seems ok now and will be getting good old 20w50 mineral oil in when remantled.
Now to get the barrels off and do the diesel trick with the crank again.

Re: The Yeti
Dieseled the crank several times and it seemed ok with 'nice' big and small ends and no movement on the crank anywhere, so we'll carry on.
A couple of weeks later.........
All extra bits stripped off the engine and started to clean the (very dirty) cases with all sorts of crap shifting chemicals with limited success as I didn't want to split the cases.
However, it wasn't going to be good enough without proper cleaning, so I stripped the gubbins out and split the cases. Gearbox and selectors seem ok but there's a bit of movement on the crank bearings. (Bugger!!!)
It looks like Chris Applebee will be doing another one then (Double bugger!!!)

Re: The Yeti
Back from Baz's today with the engine - 'all' I have to do now is .......everything else.
Hope to get the engine in the frame this weekend (if the weather holds) then 2 x 550s to get back together.
It'll be brill to have a gold J back on the road, last time was in about 1976 when I had my original 1972 GT550 - http://www.kettleclinic.co.uk/kcforum/v ... 8078#p8078 details there.
Lets hope we have a nice summer so we can get out on the bikes and annoy a few polar bears........
The original 550 'back in the day' with the CB72 I refused to P/X for a tenner!!!........

And regressed.
Oh yes, that was the 'bird' back in about 1970 when I was 'about' 19 with a race tuned Ariel Arrow that used to upset YDS3 yams at the time. Proof that four strokes are over complicated

Re: The Yeti
The mucky - and as it turned out, not very well - engine went on holiday to Uncle Baz's and had a new crank fitted and all the crap cleaning off and finally got remantled into the J.
Of course the barrels need reboring, but I have a set of + 0.5mm pistons that can go in. Barrels being media blasted and the head is ready.
