Newbie from Down Under

Here you can post a picture of you and your bike. Also where you are located and if you are prepared to give local kettle owners some of your time and experience. Please don't do discussions here just some facts about yourself. This was Glens idea! Thanks BAZ

Newbie from Down Under

Post by MelburnGT550 »

Hi all,

Just thought I'd say hi. My name is Matt from Melbourne. New to the world of older Suzi 2 strokes having just picked up a pair of project GT550's. I had an 89 RGV years ago but have since become a Honda sohc man until now. Can't wait to get these bikes back up and running.

Hi Matt welcome. With 2 550's you may be a regular visitor on here! Do you plan to put both on the road? Any questions just ask

Hi all,

Many thanks for the warm welcome.

I plan on getting them both going eventually. One is a 76 that is in really good condition but is missing a couple of barrels and a head. The other is a 73. It’s missing a variety of bits and pieces, mainly cosmetic but is seized solid as it was left outside (under a tarp) with no plugs in it! I cracked the head off and man is that thing stuck!

Will post up some pics soon (when I work out how too).

Cheers Matt

Few pics of the GT's, sorry I had to slide in one of my recently completed fully restored CB500/4.

My only issue in purchasing the GT's was I had to promise not to work on them for 6 months. Fortunately the wife works every 3 weekends so while the cats away....

"No honey that bike always looked like that, sure it was running when I bought it. Don't you remember?"

(Hope she never finds this forum or I'm a dead man! Ha ha).

I'll start a fresh thread once I get into the resto.

'Lo, Matt, welcome to the asylum.
Must be 20 years since I visited Melbourne - worked at Major PTY for a couple of weeks as we were building Aussie machines in the UK and I had to get to the nitty gritty stuff and make them comply to UK regs. Interesting stuff......
Good luck with the 550s, drop me a pm with your email address on, and I'll send you an electronic copy of a 1972 service manual that'll be handy for the 550 K you have.
Ran a 550J back in '72, and restored a K and an A in the last few years. (check 'slow starting' and 'Earwig' threads)
Just getting on with a 550J resto now.
Proof that four strokes are over complicated
