A**e !
So, having bought a kettle unseen, see the thread "uh oh", I thought, buy a GS850, they NEVER go wrong (I have had a few). It look(s) lovely, but as always, first job was to change all the fluids and filters.
Warmed the bike up in the garage, undid the sump plug and was somewhat amazed at the 6 or so litres (a guess) that flooded out, smelling distinctively of petrol. I am waiting for the petrol element to evaporate off, before probably filling it with a quantity of cheap bike oil, draining it, and then starting again tomorrow.
The alternative, is to drop the sump, and give it a darned good clean out but thats not an easy task !
I can only assume that the bike has had a leaky tap and a stuck float valve or 4.

Hi,anything mechanical can & will go wrong as you've found out already with the Kettle,
I like the GS series as well as my Suzuki 2 strokes
having had a GS750 from new & my brothers GS850G.
Good luck with the 850,lets hope there are no hidden problems with this one

VERY Pretty,, do they fetch much money in beautiful condition in the UK Kev ??
Kettles here are around $12,500 to $14,000
Dollars,
A friend was offered $25,000 for his 500/5
it recently won Trophys at the Annual Canberra Rally

Re: A**e !
It is interesting how the value of classic bikes is arrived at. A mint GS750 is worth quite a bit less than a mint Kettle but is arguably a much better bike......(Wait for it!)
I believe that classic bike values will hold up and those later bikes will become more valuable as they acquire vintage status. Eg, first year GS's will become the J Kettle of the future (That's why I've got 5 in my shed waiting to be restored )

Your probable right Kev (Nostradamus)
& yes they were a lovely bike,
Think they started design & planning for GS750 Pre A Model Kettle
PS EBay photos of GS750 I mentioned earlier,
Looks OK !!

So, looking through the box of spares was a Suzuki tap box With "leaks" written on and a used tap in. Having taken the tank off this morning to balance the carbs the tap fitted doesn't leak.
I can only assume that the old tap leaked fuel into the sump and the residue wasn't cleared out until.yesterday.
