Elderly chap gets up to vice in his shed

Post by yeadon_m »

Hah! been restoring my wife's grandfather's old Record Auto-vice. Beautifully made piece. Nearly done. I won't be refinishing it in its original red, as I prefer silver. Note the stamping and casting. How things have changed since he trained as an engineer after the war.
Cheers,
Mike
ps: what have you got thats gripping in your shed?

Its one like this - only mine was silver...until I stripped the paint and found a very adherent manly pink underneath.
The swivel function is very nice, as is the tiny anvil on the back.

This post has got me restoring my vice. It was in my house when I moved in, and was covered in white gloss paint. I have been chipping off the white paint trying to leave the original paint. I was going to strip and repaint but seems a shame to loose the patina.

Russian made in 1976 by the looks of it :)

That's a cracker! It will work for years to come, mines 100 yrs old? I think?(was told by a 90yr old man who worked in harland and Wolff and acquired /took it as a retirement plan,
Didn't know what these things were worth/cost until this thread started!
Still wouldn't be without one!/two!
