GT750L Chrome fork dust seal cover removal

Post by AndyC »

I have a 1974 GT750L and am in the process of replacing the front fork seals. I have the stanchions out of the fork legs but I need to remove the chrome dust seal covers from the fork legs to get the old seals out (and the new ones in). The chrome covers seem to be fused to the fork legs. Does anyone know how they come off?

Thanks

the ones on my 750 L model luckily came of pretty easy they are a tight slide fit there was nothing locking or retaining them to the fork staunchions there are two small slots at the bottom of them put a flat screwdriver in each pushed and pulled a bit and and off they came try a soak of WD40 through top rubber seal then heat gun or hairdryer colin

Thanks Colin

Mine have probably never been off before and certainly would not budge with a flat head screwdriver, even after soaking with penetrating oil and applying heat. So, I built a pulling tool (see attached photo

), getting hold of the cover from the inside lip and pulling it out with a long bolt. It took a few hours to build the contraption and to work the pulling bolt around the rim a few times to but in the end it was successful. Once off, it was clear that rust was binding the cover to the fork leg.

Wuh, not being an "L" specialist but, just fitted a set to my bike.
The covers came off fairly easy. With a bit of very soft flat screwdriver persuasion and lube !
I did notice there is a designated locating slot for the tiny "pimple" on the inside of the cover to go into. This will be on the leg.
Beware though, if they have been put on a few times there will be a few slots in the leg !! Cowin' bodgers ! Thus making it difficult to get off !!
Pick the slot where the screwdriver lugs are on the inside and outside of the leg.
I don't know whether this is correct but, it is aesthetically pleasing......for me anyway. !
I hope this helps.
