GT 550 k starter clutch

Hi there I have recently purchased a 550 K model GT and there is a problem with the starter not in gauging been told it could be the starter clutch can anybody tell me what sort of job it is to change the parts and would I have to have the engine out to do it or can it be done in the frame any help would be appreciated cheers Steve

Hi. Firstly there are many reasons the starter is not engaging but indeed the J and K models have a different designed starter clutch that was problematic.
No need to take the engine out. First remove oil from gearbox then remove the outer exhaust. Remove points cover and points plate. The clutch cover can then be removed. Bend tabs back off locking washer and remove large clutch nut. All clutch plates and starter clutch can then be withdrawn.

Carefully examine the starter clutch gear itself as they are famous for cracking and eventually falling apart.
