Mystery object

Post by bod750 »

I have been having a bit of a clearout in the shed and came across
this in my Father in Laws toolbox (Deceased) who was a toolmaker
There are 3 different sizes this one being the biggest, at first I thought
it might be a nut splitter but I dont think you would do any damage with it.

Hi Bod, having been a centre lathe turner for 46 years (now retired thankfully) I can tell you exactly what the mystery object is. It's called a carrier and it fits over a piece of round metal bar that requires machining and the threaded screw then tightens down onto the bar. It's then placed between centres on a lathe and the carrier drives the bar whilst its being machined to the finished shape and size.
I've not seen one since I retired and thanks to you Bod, I can now guarantee that I'll have nightmares for the next few nights. :o
Look, my paintwork hasn't got "Fish scales" :x they're "Dragon scales" right!!! However, after some thought, I will accept "Black Marlin" or "Swordfish", but definitely not "Haddock" or "Cod".

+1 with what Steve said it’s called a carrier and it enables you to turn between centres as in the pic below (I served my time as a toolmaker) open goal for you there Alan

As per my above quote Bod, I did wake up in a cold sweat last night, several times in fact, after having a nightmare that had transported me back to my previous life as a centre lathe turner and in particular, the last s**thole I worked at and the b*****d of an employer that I hated with a venom that would be hard to describe on here.
And I thought that after seven years retired I was cured :x
