Radiator Crud

Post by Dyno Dave »

Thanks for clearing the way for some pics.
Hallo people, just stumbled across this forum. About time we had a Kettles only site.
Thought i should share some pics of a radiator i am modifying for a fellow Kettler.
He wants it cut down so it is a bit narrower.
The crud inside is pretty nasty in the top of the rad. The bottom is clear.
After a troll through the web i found that battery acid is the best/only solution to the problem.
The pictures show before and after acid treatment to the top of the rad. Note, i did not brush the acid, just let it sit and the scale disolved.
The bottom of the rad was clear by the way.
Makes you wonder how many other rads are nearly blocked solid.

Welcome to the forum Dave. Just curious why do you need a rad thinner!

Yes i Know, it does seem strange to make a narrow rad but this is for the guy that came up with a Kettle called Norman Bates!
He's doing some sort of special minimalist job on it.
I'll try and get some pics when it's done.

Yeah welcome Dave. would like to see the finished item. Too be honest cutting a rad in half and welding it back together would scare the hell out of me, good luck.

You know what it's like when you say you can weld ali, only trouble is i am used to thick material, no thinner than 3mm and your average rad is fag paper thin.
Oh well, so i have had a go with Lumin weld on the small pipe that comes out of the top tube on the rad with good results.
Have since re attached 3 of these for fellow Kettlers.
My only problem now is trying to find out what the Japs used to join the halves of the top and bottom of the rad so i don't overheat it and it all falls to bits.
I will have a play with the offcuts and see what happens.
Wish me luck.

I wish i knew, he's being a bit secretive about this one.
Less is more by the sound of it.
