GT550 rebuild - fork seals help required

Post by Hix2061 »

Hi All
Ok, so the bikes stripped, and the frame, swing arm and a box of bits are at the powder coaters, so I thought, time to replace the fork seals, blast the legs, and polish them up to a nice shine ..... well, got the first leg apart, but how do i get the fork seals out ?
I'm sure it's straight forward, but woods and trees spring to mind !!!
and help / advice would be appreciated
Cheers
Mark
ps .... will post a few pics as i start putting it back together.

I used a hairdryer to heat them up and they prize out quite easily after that, hope this helps. You could use a slide hammer too I suppose :tw

Thanks Gary, a hair dryer and a large square pry bar has done the trick. Was worried about damaging the sides, but it worked a treat once warmed up. :D

One more question ...... did you push the new thinner seals all the way in, or just enough to sit under the clip ?

Ooh not sure on that one, I thought mine were the same size so fit up to the clip but I may be wrong

Some after market seals are not the same thickness. I bought some that were not thick enough for my 750, searched ebay and found some 5mm thicker fitted nice just under the circlip. The old seals I took out the previous owner had fitted 2 sets of thinner seals to each leg.

I bought genuine Suzuki seals from Baz and they were thinner too.
There's another thread on here somewhere where we ordered a 5mm deep spacer and put that in before the seal. Not ideal but it's the way I did it and they aren't leaking

All sorted, well apart from the pitted fork that is ...... thanks for the help.
Don't worry there'll be many more threads for you to kill as the build progresses !!
