Moving on......this week I have mostly being playing petrol tanks...

As usual I wanted it to be different.....I wanted a split tank with a pot for the oil under one cap (I am keeping the mechanical oil pump).

So as the base frame is a VFR that seemed like a good start point as I also like that the VFR tank hinges up from the back to access the carbs.

So starting with this...
IMG_2918.jpg
The filler cap has overflow pipes routed to the base so I wanted to keep those so I just cut and moved it left a bit.

Now hack another cap section from another tank and weld a oil pot to the underside with a tube sticking through the base.....

and on the bike......

Side shot of the mock up build. I've still got additional engine mounts to weld into the frame which is the next big job but I just wanted to get a feel for how the tank looks.

I've also done some work on modify Suzuki 1200 bandit clocks to take the electronic displays (basically made whole new bodies but kept the shiny chrome bits) and will probably run twin LED headlamps. Just gotta find the right look.

So time to get the filler out and finish the tank. Still waiting for the ported barrels back (aaargh!) before I can finish the frame welding.

Most of the rest of it kinda fits now though.

I also did a mock run of the electric (fuel - old post mistake) WATER pump and hosing and with a neat mod to the water jacket inlet the pump is hidden and the main hose routes underneath so all the plumbing is nearly invisible.

I can't remember the earlier stuff, but are you planning on a pressure relief valve from the pump to the carbs as against gravity feed as 'normal'?
If not, you'll over pressure the carb feed and flood the carbs, shirley. :? WTF'S Shirley anyway?
I had a similar issue on a LandRover with a pump fed 4bbl carb on a 4.6 litre V8, and had a return feed to the tank to take over pressure fuel (this also kept the pump cool). Not in tank though, so I expect you've already though this through, or has the in tank pump a facility built in :?:
Just wondering, suggesting and as I'm not sure, wanting to learn.
Hopefully you've already thought of this.

Alan

I just realised I made a FUBAR in the last post......Its not a FUEL pump I was talking about it is the WATER pump!! I read your comment and went ' is he mad?', but no it was me! So no FUEL pump on this (yet), Might play with fuel injection later once I know the porting/exhaust design works.

Thanks for catching it!!

Cheers

Kev

Phew! I couldn't understand that you'd missed it with the care you've taken with the rest of the build.
It does show that people are interested and do suggest sensible comments - even me!

You can use a fuel pump with old school type carbs. They did it on snowmobiles for decades. What you do have to do is to fit smaller (#1.5) float valves and a small electric pump from say an FZR400/600 etc or vacuum pump.

But gravity works well too and is one less thing to tax the electrical system..

Thought I would have a go at mocking up the final aspiration!
Mockup white.jpg
Still a work in progress but it will be something like this. Plan is twin round headlights and a fly screen. probably go with end cans on the exhaust eventually.

There will also be rear-sets in the final build but they are dam tricky to render :D

At last...….Barrels back from porting!! :D

Pics show the porting done and reed carriers fitted (lots of grinding on the inlets!!).

O ring head done to give zero deck and match the Squish design.

Upper rear engine mounts welded in place. There is another set that mate with the cylinder head.

Now I need to pressure test the water jacket after all the grinding then I can finish the motor (bottom end all done).

Then I just need to assemble the massive pile of parts in the workshop and make it look like a bike!!

These jobs tend to stall for ages, then it all happens at once!

O ring barrels and squish head all assembled and being pressure tested (note the foot pump!!)

17 O rings on the head and they all sealed!!
barrel test.jpg
Ran it up to 1.5 bar (just past the Rad cap release pressure).

Next is finish the reed valve fit then pistons in, hopefully this weekend!! :D

Then down to the black art of carburation......3 brand 36mm flat side Mikuni's to tune up.

Pistons in and head all pressure tested OK......Phew!! Lots of O rings.

Water system next. Mechanical pump has gone (saved some more weight from the engine). Electrical one fitted behind carbs.

As the rad is under the seat and the outlet at the base of the engine casings has been rotated to bring that feed up under the engine, so all the hoses fit nicely and hide away. The top hose fits under the tank and behind the new radiator side vents. Just sensor to fit and the controller and we are all good. Those are the easy bits!
IMG_0795.jpg
Electrics next so I can run the final dynastarter test. Hopefully this weekend. Heres a shot of the basic ignition layout (Electrex RHS electronic ignition fitted).
