I had a kettle once that just had a plain alloy plate bolted on, which seemed to work ok. I don't recall if it had an o ring on the inside though, so I'm not much use!

On the contrary mate; that's what I had seen on various Google images, but on removing my gear indicator switch, it appears that the gear selector drum shaft sticks out into the final drive sprocket area, so a dished, Suzuki-made blanking plate is necessary. But I originally thought the same as you. Could have been a different year. Mine's a '76.

It does, yes. Doh!

That explains why that alloy one I had looked a trifle over engineered - it wasn't a flat plate, it was a lump of alloy over an inch thick. It must have been machined out inside, or at least drilled out; it was a bit rough.

Early bikes had a simple neutral switch on the end of the cam and if that's removed, I am pretty sure a flat plate will work. The later selector drum/cam is longer and needs a cap like the Yamaha RD blank off plate to clear the nose.
