Does anyone else keep track of costs?

Post by swarrans »

I know it seems like an act of flagellation or self abuse (steady now!) but I feel compelled to keep a spreadsheet on what I spend on my various restorations!

It can be truely frightening and although I don't view any of my bikes or cars as pure investments, it can help me justify the latest expense when comparing the totals to the theoretical market price (or not as the case may be!).

So, am I the only one that keeps track of the bills? (do you keep a second set of accounts for the boss?!)

I do have a plastic bag full of invoices and receipts so i know when i replaced what , but i dare not start adding up costs. Mind you i have had the GT for 22 years now...
But then my bike is a rider complete with dings and scratches and wont EVER be sold whilst i am here so it has no monetary value to me.. ;)

Yes sorry to say i do as well. My GT has a full photo documented stack of photo's taken throughout the rebuild, and all the invoices from work done and parts purchased.
Like you say, it does get frightening when you look back, but well worth it.

I started doing that many years ago when I bought the Landrover and dropped a tuned 4.6V8 in it, then uprated gearbox, axles, and lots of other bits, then I stopped counting the outlay and just counted the entertainment value.
Quids in.
A 'few' Gt550s, a Hippo and a GSX now.
Value more than outlay.
Stop counting - and that's a true Yorky saying it as it is.
If you can't afford it, or worry about the cost, get on a bus and be an old moaning git.

Hi,

I keep a detailed spreadsheet of costs on all my restorations, also of all parts used etc.

Wouldn't share it - life wouldn't be worth living!

I did, twice, for the GT380 & GT750. They balanced each other out. Then the GT550 came along and dragged me deep in the red and I've not stopped digging since!
