I got this today on the same subject for Northern Ireland ( UK ) from the AVOC
Good morning. First thing FORGET ABOUT EVERYTHING YOU HAVE BEEN TOLD.

To obtain an Age Related Mark in NI you require the following :

Foreign Tax Documents
V3 Form
V55/5
MOT
Insurance
Cheque for £60 made out to AOVC
Cheque for first registration fee in UK made out to DVA

WITHOUT THE FOREIGN TAX DOCUMENTS you cannot obtain an Age Related Mark.
If you haven't these documents you can apply for a Current Series Mark ie a 2012 plate and at any time in the future can purchase an Age Related Mark from a dealer and have this transfeered to the bike.

Trust above is clear.

Kind regards.

At the beginning of the year I brought a uk model 1968 Suzuki t20 250 super six in bits as a complete resto project but it had what I thought to be the holy grail....the original log book albeit being the the old blue style reg doc. Thinking there would be no probs and just send the log book off and register it my name...two months must have passed and no return log book in the post so I phoned them to enquire what was happening where I was passed to various people to be told as there had been no recent action on the reg it had dropped off their system and that they would be sending me a application pack to register a new vehicle... when the large brown envelope arrived with enough documents inside for a coroners inquest my heart sank as I started reading through all the red tape and requirements inspections, photo's,specialist club dating certificates, bill of sale, v55 ect ect as if it were a new vehicle or an import despite having a uk reg doc. Not having the time or inclination to get involved in such consuming efforts I decided to do nothing... and shelve the whole thing and even maybe sell the thing on .....After doing absolutely nothing since for months, out of the blue today I received a brand new shiny red v5 for the bike through the post in my name... :o :P  :) :D  :!: :?: work that out? the morale if in doubt do nothing 8-)

I see this thread has been bumped back to the top, (or maybe it's pinned?) so a bit of new info just to try to keep things up to date as I understand them.

DVLA policy with regard to date evidence for issuing age related registration numbers has changed.

It's now a lot easier to find out who is allowed to issue date letters and who isn't, there's a list called the V765/1 list, (just Google V765/1 DVLA and it comes up) if you are on the list and the vehicle in question relates to your club / organisation, then you can issue a date letter.

Of course, things are never simple with DVLA. They say that the primary purpose of clubs / organisations being on the list is to provide date evidence for vehicles pre-1983 for which details have been lost on DVLA's system and that for bikes less than 25 years old you should contact the manufacturer, only if they can't help should you contact an independent source.

Also worth noting, if the person issuing the letter is doing his / her job correctly, they will want to see profile pics of the bike and pics of the VIN and maybe the engine number as well, they may even want to inspect the bike, so you'll need to have a complete bike.

DVLA also pick out, at random, vehicles to inspect, this involves someone visiting to check that the vehicle exists, is complete, that the frame and engine numbers are original factory stamped etc etc. So don't go dismantling and sending bits off for chroming / painting etc until the registration number comes back, you could end up in a bit of a pickle if they ask to inspect and you can't produce the complete bike.

I'm still importing and registering bikes myself, so am dealing with this stuff almost every day I'm sad to say, so as always, more than happy to give any help / advice to forumers who are struggling. Not saying that I'll have the answer, but I'll try to help if possible.

I have just done my Honda Dream 4e 1954, it took 3 go's, even with 2 VJMC letters and a letter from Honda uk, ( Honda uk and Honda Japan had no records on this bike on the pc)they still refused it, rang Honda uk, and asked how they dated the ones in the honda museum then, didn't know was the answer. DVLA wanted to know how it was the year i said it was, it's very easy on the early Dreams, as part of the engine and frame numbers are part of the year, so you would know right away if that engine didn't belong in that bike, I still had to prove it, so i had to find other bikes with same engine frame numbers, so got info from Auction sales, and year books for japanese motorcycles. any way got it now, I think they make it harder for some years, as i have ended up with a 3 number 3 letter which is transferable. not that i want to..also just done a Yamaha YL1e 100cc twin 1967, i had to have a inspection at home, it was done by a retired police officer, the yamaha had matching frame and engine numbers..

Hi
Can any one help, I've bought an American import, I have the certificate of title and the NOVA number but I have just seen on the certificate of title it states the 'primary Brand' ASSBL PARTS. I'm assuming this is going to be impossible to register with the DVLA
Anyone ever come across this

You do not have to use the title document to register it here. The NOVA number and a dating certificate will be enough. Lose it or you will end up with a Q plate. Kev
