Barry's carb refurbishments

Post by yeadon_m »

Folks,

I have a good set of BS40s on my 750A but had got fed up with tinkering to get everything right and they're also a decade since last fully refurbished (by Tim Harwood) so I treated myself to a 'new' set by Baz.

Fitted them yesterday and took a short test ride today. All went very well, striking up brightly on 3 on choke, was briefly rideable on choke, and was nice off choke as it warmed up (ie 1/4 mile). Hot idle was stable at 1000rpm. I've installed the 0.8mm pilot air restriction jets as my motor tends to be a bucking thing, so as expected, a bit rich immediately off-idle, but lovely over 1/16th throttle. Bucking was slight to absent, I'd have to provoke it to feel any at all. So very happy with my carbs.

Most importantly for some of us including me is that they look like jewelry!

Thanks Barry,
Mike

Monkey,
Yes, I've used this chap:
http://www.aloh.co.uk/renovation/chrome.php
Beware though: exhaust repair is finnicky, time consuming, expensive and often disappointing. Even a 'metal god' runs out of road with poor parts.
I wouldn't bother repair one with tin worm, ever. I've worn the expensive T shirt. The holes you can see hide many more you cannot.
A solid pipe that doesn't rattle, no rust, baffle comes out easily and one big dent may be worth saving, but one with numerous little dents will make you cry at the cost and it'll never look perfect on the repairs. Chrome is horribly unforgiving and, by comparison, sometimes a repaired / chromed pipe will make an unmade up Hilary Clinton look like a babe :-)
So in short, even weighing up costs, its often better to buy a better pipe and get that chromed.
Good luck!
