Re: Ponderosa Sunday 5th May.
And the culprit is the shim washer that goes behind the idler gear.
Seems the last time I had the crankcase cover off, to replace a leaking gasket, the shim washer must have slipped out from behind the idler gear and I haven’t noticed. It’s been stuck behind the crankcase cover for the last 6 or 7 years and finally came loose and lodged between the starter clutch and water pump drive gear.
The only reason I can think this has happened is because the day before I decided to check the adjustment of the clutch. I leant the bike over to the left, to minimise any loss of oil from the clutch adjuster cover, and propped the bike up on two pieces of 3 x 2 against the foot peg.
The washer must have dislodged whilst the bike was leaning over and jammed in the gear. Anyway, new parts ordered so should be fixed by the end of the week.
