What I should have done was try it without the cable attached But it only just crossed my mind.
I think they call that a senior moment !!!

They all "stick" if the motor and therefore the pump are in a certain position. Rotate the motor a few more turns and the arm should spring back to the fully closed position.

Of course if the cable i sticking that's a whole other can of worms but usually it's just what position the motor is in when it stops.

OK so back again...I tried it without the cable attached no change the arm still stops short of the end stop by about 6-7mm even when turning the motor over by hand the arm doesn't move
but taking the top off the pump and trying it on the bench it goes fully home
Now for the bad news looking at the shaft there is a gouge big enough to feel with your finger nail on the right hand edge of the cutaway,
It would seem that the center shaft of the oil pump is catching there and stopping the shaft from fully rotating closed?
I can only assume the top of the housing is to low and the gasket I used when rebuilding the pump is to thin :o
So the question is any recommendations as to where to source a new gasket?

take the pump off and rotate the shaft by hand. The arm should click back to the closed position.

Pumps tend to have a wear point as can be seen on the pinkpossum page http://pinkpossum.com/GT750/Oilpump.htm

Ian (Astrax) has those gaskets in stock ready to ship for Christmas...

Once again I am in debt to the wisdom of the forum :D
Teazer I did look at your link and there is a similar dent /wear mark on the inside of the cut out in one of your photo's
I will get a new gasket and see how we go.
The pump obviously works Ok as we have done a few hundred miles this summer maybe I should have left well alone!
