Dave,
I have used exactly the method you have and this allows you to get the measurement as if the float tang is 'just touching' while having the ease of the thing inverted.
Nice to know I am not alone in keeping one old float valve glued and in my parts box for this purpose :-)

After a few weeks of not being able to work on my bike, I fiitted the new float today. Hey presto, it works like a dream. And no blue haze from the exhaust - must of previously had too much fuel being delivered to the middle carb.
