Paul it certainly looks like your cylinder mixture was contaminated with gearbox oil. The reason your left cylinder had some as well is because the right SRIS would have fed some of the same into the left cylinder and that accounts for the middle being unscathed

Thanks Barney, that's good info. I didn't know how the SRIS works. I now understand how the oil can get to the LH cylinder. I expect when I drop the oil it will have petrol in it.

I'm really surprised that this has happened Alan. Not what you would expect with a £500 crank rebuild. The crank was fine before the engine rebuild, but on strip down there was play on the conrods, hence having it rebuilt.

I think everything on my engine was 'tired'. Crank seals, bearings, gearbox bearings etc. I know it had some tatie while I had it, but as it wasn't a standard motor when I had a look inside during the resto, I don't know how it had been treated prior to getting the bike. Have a look on the 'Earwig' thread, which will be updated when there's progress 'soon'!

Well thats the engine back out, ready for its second annual holiday to Dudley. Fingers crossed that second time will be the last time. Much easier to remove the engine this time having already done it once. And at least its all clean this time.

Good luck Paul, I hope Baz sorts it for you. How long do you think it'll be before it's back on tbe road?
Look, my paintwork hasn't got "Fish scales" :x they're "Dragon scales" right!!! However, after some thought, I will accept "Black Marlin" or "Swordfish", but definitely not "Haddock" or "Cod".

First week of October before Baz can fit it in, so mid October possibly. Hopefully I can get a few miles in before the gritters are out. About the same time as you might be back on a bike Steve.

So that's why it's taking him so long to do my 550J engine is it? Image

Have I jumped the queue Alan ? At least Baz has had plenty of practice with 550 engines lately so it should only be half a days job
