The Gear box Whine in 5th Gear is due to oil starvation at some point in its past, unless you can get an other gear box or 5th gear witch is unlikley you will have to live with it shouldnt be a problem. I had a 4th and 5th gear whine for ten years and many thousands of miles on one of my t500s with no problems. if you can drop on a gear box whats to say that one has the same problem.

Like Richard says, unless you can find a replacement and hope its no worse than the one you have its a case of just living with it I suppose

You could always approach Nova Racing who do complete gearboxes usually for race application.
It depends on what value you put on it, hope this helps.

I may be wrong but I believe the whine comes from the bearing and not the gear.
These gearboxes have split caged bearings,Unfortunatly no longer no longer available.

Its useally the gears them selves that get pitting on them from getting very hot from oil starvation. and normaly if its the bearings it will whine in all gears not just fitth.
