Gear shifter splines

What's the best way to fix the splines that the gear shifter slides onto ? Aloha and thanx .

I have used a lemonade tin cut into a thin strip, wrapped round the splines and then tighten down onto it, its worked for me but depends how bad the splines are. If the splines are generally ok you can cut a slightly bigger slot in the gear change lever which means it has further movement to trap the splines

Funny story , I was riding down the freeway in 4th gear, I looked down and my shifter was gone . I made it home after 25 miles of riding with no shifter . We all know that 2 strokes will rattle stuff loose .

Stud lock or spring washers on everything

Best way is to replace the shaft.

Pushing some needles or pins into the spines when fitted can help take up the slack. Then cut them off flush.

seems a bodge I know, but when the same thing happened to me on my Z650 many years ago, I wrapped the end of the shaft with some self adhesive foil tape and forced the lever back on .it's still like that now, 8 years later.

For a group that generally prefers pristine original bikes, I cannot believe the bodges that are being suggested.

Gear shift shafts are not hard to find and take very little time to swap out. If they really were unobtainable, it's not hard to machine the damaged end off and replace it with the good splined end off say a GSXR which has the same spine pattern. OK so that requires some careful machining and welding but it's not rocket science.
