Gt750B points cover

Prepping my points cover ready to go for chroming and had to remove a bitumen/resin ring which was in the end of the case, even though I heated the case up the bitumen came out in bits. What is the purpose of this and do I need to replace it?

Interesting that John the early J Ks had this stuff fitted L M A Bs appear not to if you find some decent stuff might treat the 550 :)
