Back up home generators

Post by Optedout »

Not bike related but I know that there are a lot of experienced guys on
here so here goes.....
Does anyone have or have knowledge of back up home generators which
kick in if the power supply is lost please?
I’m sure that Boris and Co won’t let it happen but just in case!

Depends what you want. https://www.generatorwarehouse.co.uk/ho ... ators.html
Can't see the neighbours being impressed and it's just money 'sat' if you don't need it.

In the US, blackouts are not as rare as one might be led to believe. Especially with storms and wild fires and snow and ice storms causing outages.

Many home here have backup generators just in case and most are Generac (sp?) brand so they have a small(ish) IC engine driving a generator and are pretty quite. They are designed to power the whole house and are sized accordingly. None of them are industrial size diesel powered.

What other people rush out to buy are smaller portable units they can use when they go to a race track or camping. Those can be wired via an extension cord to say the fridge or a few lights or the internet gateway and a PC. They must never be run in a garage or inside the house and are really just to provide light and maybe a little heat and are enough for most of us.

So the question is what are you trying to achieve and where on the cost-benefit curve do you fall. If you have unlimited cash and continuing on with life untouched by the outside world, then get a full back up system. If you are closer to the other end of the spectrum and don't want to spend any more than necessary to get just enough power to get through a short blackout then a portable unit is probably a better fit.

Thank you for your replies gentlemen, they are most helpful.
I may be being a bit paranoid but I remember when we were joking about
Coronavirus on this forum when we didn’t have any idea just how far reaching
the impact would be.
Cheers Dave.

If you get CV, try to pass it on to someone you don't like before you get really ill.
A good quality pork pie, bacon and two stroke diet seems to keep it at bay, it's worked for me anyway! ;)
