ok
If you look at my photo in the area at the rear of the sprocket, you should just about see a blanking plug (It is behind a cable clamp that supports the two looms. I've taken the clamp off so you can see.) Mine has a smear of sealant on it which is why it has a white splash on it.
It looks like yours is missing?

Hi
I've added an arrow. It is a black plastic plug that seals that opening. Do you have on the same?

Re: 1976 550 oil leak and unsteady idle
LOL! Anybody have any ideas when it comes to installing it or should I just pop it in? Should I drain all the oil and put it in with some sealant let it set and then add the oil? what kind os sealant should I use? Thanks

You need to drain enough oil out so there is none seeping when the bike is on the main stand. Clean all traces of oil from the opening and use 3 bond or a similar non setting liquid gasket around the lip. Carefully drive the plug in with a suitable drift. Kev

Hi Kev is this the black plug that's on the casing joint line If so mine has a slight leak from there but only when on the side stand with 1500cc oil in the gearbox it's ok when on the center stand

Re: 1976 550 oil leak and unsteady idle
It is bud. If it is leaking then it will only do it on the side stand as the oil level is below the join when the bike is on the main stand if the right amount of oil is in the box. I recommended draining some out because it isn't unusual to have boxes overfilled and the liquid gasket won't take on an oily surface. Kev

Re: 1976 550 oil leak and unsteady idle
I installed the plug today by first cleaning the casing and plug real good using acetone and using grey permatex on both the plug and the casing. I then tapped the plug into place using a wood punch and a bit of rubber came off as if the plug seemed a hair too big and I forced it in with the punch.. hopefully not. I also gooped over the entire thing in an attempt to get it sealed a little better around the edges. The goop says it takes 24 hours to fully cure although I will give it about 30, top the oil off and stick it over on the side stand to see what happens..
Thanks,
Richie
