GT380 Cable Routing

Post by oldjapanesebikes »

I was wondering whether anyone had a photo or two showing the routing of the alternator and gear indicator wire harnesses for the GT380 ? I bought mine largely in boxes and neither of these were fitted to the engine when it arrived, so I've never seen a 'before' image of what it is supposed to look like. It seems like tight quarters behind the sprocket cover and I see no really obvious route to get the alternator cable up to the top side of the crankcase, so I was looking at running it the same as on the GT750 under the cases. Just thought I'd ask first before going too far.

Thx ! 8-)

Hi Allan, if it's similar to the 550, it comes out of the bottom of the alternator, to the back of where the neutral/gear indicators are and picks up those wires there (the neutral wire is inside the alternator harness on the 550J and is in the rectifier plug along with the alternator wiring), then under the bottom of the sprocket and there's a shallow 'U' bracket to hold the wires away from the chain & sprocket. Upwards to the rear of the inner casing and then to the rectifier plug.
Unfortunately, I haven't any pics and I only got the cases on last week! Typical!!

Thanks Alan - I'll take another look at it, but I do recall seeing that U bracket you mention. This bike is a real dog's breakfast - some '75, some '77, some '74 - just a big jigsaw puzzle !

Ian

This is how a 550 looks, taken before and after my engine rebuild.

On the bottom picture, I ran the wiring straight up and out, rather than under the threaded boss to the right and then up. But if it's clear of the chain, so what!!!
