Gt 550 M Stator

Post by wents75 »

Hi all.
Been absent from tour forum for a while now. Hope alls good?
Iam sure my stators had it as on a long ride my gel battery goes flat. Gt 550 M
I replaced the the reg and rec with a decent combined unit and put a fuse on the red wire back the battery so I can use a current metre . So at medium revs it fluctuating from 8 to 13 ohms ...
I didn't replace the stator, does anyone know where to get them ?
I installed a Newtronic points but they dont dont manufacturer them.
Any thoughts welcome.

Hi Wents, first of all you have to make sure the rotor is ok - mainly the brushes. Check they aren't worn out and test the rotor on ohms, with both brushes clear of the rotor - put some dry card between the brushes and rotor. You need to identify the rotor too - if it has a 'pigs nose' sticking out with 2 tracks around the pig's nose, it's a Denso, flat vertical face, it's a Kokusan - see this link for testing info - Clicky linky
Not sure what you're measuring, but current is in amps, resistance is in ohms.

Oh, and I have spare rotors etc. if needed. If you need rotor brushes, don't buy genuine. I posted a thread about that too! - HERE - clicky linky

Hi Alan
So I have tbe inferior kokusan stator.
The brushes seem worn to me but do spring onto the rotor.
Loads of black carbonisation on the coils.
So I get a steady 5.0 ohms resistance as per picture all the way round the rotor. ( not sure this is how to test)
I have also found some delamination on the roter as per pictures
Can you get replacements ?
Me thinks its cattle trucked?

Replacements are available - I have some, but they're at home and I'm in Durham until Friday! Remember that the rotor is the bit that rotates, and the stator is the bit that doesn't!
You can 'wash' the stator coils in wd40 to get tbe black carbon off and it shouldn't hurt it. If you pm me your email address, I'll send you a copy of an early service book with lots of specs and test details in. Loads still relevant to later models.
You test between the tracks and it will be low resistance, and from track to earth (or non track bit of the rotor) and that should be very high resistance. Very low resistance beteen any 2 yellows on the totor, and high resistance between any yellow and earth. Can't remember the numbers offhand, you'll have to wait til Friday!
Lots of info if you dp a search on 'charging' or 'alternators'. Basically all the Suzy triples work the dame.

HI Alan
The rotor appears to have shed some of its resin covering as flakes I discovered in the casing !
Id be interested in a replacement thats for sure .
As long as I can service the stator, replace the brushes. I saw your link for some I can file down.
Many thanks
Ian
