Oh sh1t

Post by PaulD738 »

Oh dear, the only seal I never replaced on my Dobbin resto was the crank center seal
I started her up to adjust the tickover for a few minutes and everything was fine. However I was in the shed today faffing about with something else when I noticed a film of oil on the back of the crankcase where the engine number is stamped? At first I thought it was two stroke but wiping it up it was gearbox oil. Just above this point on the engine is the crankcase breather so it looks to me like the center oil seal has blown and is pressuring the crankcase
Feck feck feckity feck it looks like the motor has to come out and have the crank rebuilt
They're rubbish them Jap bikes lad they won't last five minutes! you want to get yourself a nice Royal Enfield!

Yeah I will do Kev, it seems odd as the first start up involved riding up and down the back of the house for about half an hour with no ill effects but a two minutes run to set the tickover and I find gearbox oil?
I’ll see what tomorrow brings

Try a sensible but short run first - 5 miles? ish??
Do you need to borow a numberplate for testing purposes?
Might just need a run to clear the crap out, bud.
Fingers crossed.

Mmm I suppose I could always disguise it as the Kat
I’ll try ragging it up and down the garage service road behind the house for a bit? That’ll keep the neighbours happy

Well it looks like (fingers crossed) it’s panic over. Checked this morning and found a thin film of oil in the same place so as it hasn’t been run since that rules the crank seals out. I did notice a small track of oil from the two stroke oil level sight. The center screw was loose. I’ve cleaned the leak up and put some paper towel where the oil gathers to check I’ve found the problem. Phew :?
