Wheel building & axle stand?

Post by yeadon_m »

Hi folks,
Now I’ve got a little more room i my shed, I’m planning to have a go at wheel building.
I’m fortunate that when my Kettle was restored, the then owner used stainless spokes & nipples. My 380B, not so much. I bought it’s current front wheel already newly built up, so the ad said.
I didn’t realise at the time that the rim isn’t even the correct profile, the spokes aren’t the right length (which is why the lacing pattern is nothing like it should be) or thickness & they've gone a rather nasty finish.
I’m armed with a genuine NOS rim which I bought from Reiner a decade ago, I’ve a spoke set in stainless from C Wyldes.
I’ve two questions, if anyone can advise?
-one of us here is very good at this. I’m sure I remember them posting a “how to” video. Does anyone have a link?
-I think an axle / wheel stand is vital. Does anyone have one they are willing to lend to me? I’d cover the postage if yes!
Cheers,
Mike

Mike, I have done both mygt380 and gt750 wheels, using s/steel spokes from wyldes and the original rechromed rims. I used the excellent tutorial by OAKY'S Garage on You tube. it's still on there because I've just checked.
I found it very good and learned a lot. I managed to do both these bikes using this, but it's a few years ago now.
I didn't get them trued upmyself though, as a local cycle shop here in Scunthorpe did it for me for £5 a wheel!... that's a bargain!
best of luck with it, but Oaky's garage is the place to go on youtube.
cheers

Thanks everyone!
That video is just the ticket. I’ll build something to hold the wheel in build.
All the best,
Mike

I used a black and decker work mate to locate the wheel rim on its own axle and watched a you tube how to clip a few times.
Mind you I’ve not ridden it yet might be like a clownsxbike.
everyones a winner
