GS1000 forks ??

Post by Lozscott »

Hi everyone , I have just joined this forum and hoping i can pick up some information . I have had my kettle since 1987 and as it was 'just an old old bike' it has evolved away from standard over the years . I am giving it a full rebuild this winter as the powder coating that was done 35 years ago is now a bit tatty . My problem is sorting out the handling , the modern gas hagons have transformed the back end , the bridgestone bt045's have helped also but front end is still standard and a bit unnerving at times . I think a heavier oil might help but i am sure i have read somewhere that GS1000 forks can be used and that their internals are more advanced than the kettle forks . My question would be does anyone know if this is true , they look almost identical in pictures but i dont know about length , tube size or caliper mountings , thanks , Loz

A quick search on ebay at fork seal measurements says no, 35mm for GT750 and 37mm for GS1000, so looks like not a straight swap for just forks, I am sure you could make them fit with the triple tree also.

Have a read through this about fork emulators and new springs, may be a better option, after all the GS1000 forks are 40+ year old tec too.

Out of interest looking into this sv650 talked about in the above link, I find that SV650 forks are 35mm, depends how far you want to go off spec.

There is a lovely looking 750 on here using GSXF600 forks and wheels ect.
