1974 L model exhust coupler lupe/sealant?

Hello,

I'm a new member and owner of an orange 1974 for almost 8 years.

I have a simple question, but one I haven't found the answer for. I replaced the tires recently and did a thorough degrease with the exhaust off. This is, as you know, the model with the exhaust couplers below the radiator. When I took the exhaust apart there seemed to be some sort of sealant past around the o-rings of the couplers joining the outer pipes to the center. In cleaning it all up, I wiped those down, so now on reassembly, I'm wondering what product I should apply here? Thanks for the help.

Hi some high temp exhaust sealant should be ok for those joints .

dow corning silicone sealant did it for me not cheap though

Thanks for your replies! I had been wondering about the role of the "paste" I had found, because it (for the most part) did not seem like it had set (hardened). So I was wondering if it's role was more a sealant or a lube for the o-rings??? I'm not used to o-rings in exhaust, so is additional sealant necessary? I had actually considered pipe dope (which doesn't set) or if the job is more to lube the o-rings: cam lube or sil-glyde.

The couplers were originally sealed with the o-ring along with a form of putty on a roll.
