Suzuki GT550 J for sale

Post by barney01 »

This is my Suzuki GT 550 J manufacturer's plate June 1972.
I have owned this bike for 30 years and have ridden 30k miles on it
It was imported in 1990 from California USA. I have painstakingly restored it back to reflect the J Model as it had been updated. Everything is correct and in fact the late Ian Sandy used photos from me to post on his Old Japanese bikes website.
The engine was rebuilt including new crank seals and the barrels were rebored to first over in 2011. The paintwork is brand new (thanks Canaletto.)
Bike is currently on Sorn and is Tax and MOT exempt.
The bike has always been garaged and has rarely seen rain.
All the chrome is original not rechromed
New accent electronic ignition. New tyres. New DiD HD chain and new JT sprockets front and rear. New sprocket carrier bearing. New domed perspex clock glasses. Lots of stainless steel bits and bobs. Borg Warner starter clutch fitted.
I am only selling this bike due to ill health. It has been in a vac bag in my garage for 4 years. I was going to keep it as a trophy but it deserves to be ridden. It is a much admired bike.
It starts first press of the button.
The price I'm asking is £6,000. Please send me a PM if interested. I will be advertising it elsewhere in a couple of weeks but hope someone on here will take it.
Sorry for the long post😄

Having to give up a way of life due to age/illness is very hard. On the tv program "bangers & cash", so often a vehicle has to go to auction due to age/illness, and it's a difficult decision.

This age process is just crap

It's always the same. Getting bike ready for sale and petrol tap started leaking😟
So new gasket tank to tap to start. Easily available on Ebay. Then checked diaphragm which was fine but the o ring on the shut off valve was hard (well it's probably over 50yrs old) so I decided to replace it. The specs are id 3.5mm and cross section 1.75mm. I couldn't source 1.75 so I bought 2.0mm and it's fits and works fine. It's also nitrile so should last longer!. https://simplybearings.co.uk/shop/p8075 ... _info.html
So to the rubber seal between the lever and the tap. This is where the problem was found.(See photo) The original rubber had perished on the face so that it did not seal.
Now the J/K models have a different tap to the later ones and therefore have a different seal. The only place I could find a replacement was Classic Suzuki NL.
Unfortunately with postage the final bill was £22! The part is not original but a nitrile rubber pattern. I had no option so it was ordered and it sorted the problem.
The last thing to do was polish the back of the lever face so it turned smooth.
Now I can sell it🙂
