Who was it that re manufactored the water pump drive gear

Post by didge »

The one Suzuki made in plastic, (why DID they do that in plastic ?)

I seem to remember someone made one from the kettle club in stainless, but who, and where do I find him or one of these gears ?

I think they are plastic or nylon and designed to break to save other damage. You can get new for about £30 and seem to last 20 years +

Like you say Baz, there is quite a complicated set of gears and shafts to drive the water pump and tacho cable. If either pump or cable was sticky, the poor gears/shafts could get damaged and require a strip down. The plastic gear is 'sacrificial'. Its also a lot quieter I have been told. Those who fitted an ? aluminium gear found it very noisy.

According to Crooks the plastic one is obselite.

Mine has a crack across either side of it which has been drilled to stop it creeping any further, but still has, so I've drilled a couple more small holes in it.

they were made of plastic because if the engine developed a water pump problem it would break the the plastic gear instead of damaging the metal gears
