stuck clutch

Post by gladders »

Motor rebuilt by Baz with original clutch but then sat in my front bedroom for 18 months, put it in the bike and the clutch was stuck, tried rocking back and forth and pushing it in a high gear but no good, got it up to temperature but still stalled if put in gear. stripped clutch and the plates were stuck together with oil, cleaned them in the parts washer dried them off and left them for a couple of days, checked that they are not warped and in spec for thickness, refitted and adjusted clutch and it worked fine until I put fresh 20/50 oil in it and then back to not able to turn wheel with the clutch pulled in and in gear, stripped the clutch down again and the plates were well stuck together again

Not sure if it is the plates or the oil or something else
any help appreciated
Cheers

Are you using mineral or synthetic oil?

It's not oil then unless in the past the friction plates have been contaminated with synthetic and it isn't all coming out when you soak them. Are the metal plates clean and shiny? Kev

Cheap 20/50 mineral Comma seems to work better with Kettle clutches ;)
If the clutch won't free Grant don't try to put it in gear trust me mate i broke a 3rd gear main shaft tooth on the Bonnie last year
The slightest warping with steel plates can cause sticking
Cured the Triumph with new plates :)

The steels are fairly clean with a little discolouration, the clutch must have worked when first built as Baz told me that then run the motor and select all the gears

No I won't, not keen to break anything else, may have to be a set of plates as you suggest but not keen on spending the £90

Discolouration sounds interesting. It may have been run dry and overheated. If you can get hold of a spare set of metal plates and frictions you will quickly get to the bottom of the problem
